US vows to reject a new UN Security Council resolution on a ceasefire in Gaza
If the Algerian-drafted resolution calling for a humanitarian truce in Gaza were put to a vote at the UN Security Council, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US ambassador to the UN, issued a warning that Washington would not support it.
According to a statement released on Saturday by Thomas-Greenfield, the US has been negotiating with Hamas to free captives and put an end to hostilities for a minimum of six weeks.
"To advance this agreement, President Biden has spoken with Prime Minister Netanyahu, the presidents of Egypt, and Qatar several times during the past week. The essential components are in place, even though there are still gaps, the ambassador said.
"We think that this agreement is the best chance to bring all hostages back to their families and to allow for a protracted ceasefire. This would enable more vital supplies to reach Palestinian residents in dire need, such as food, water, gasoline, medication, and other necessities.
